The Unexpected Kindness of People Who Could Crush Me

Last week was my first week training with Jared at STRONG gym. And to be honest, it wasn't anything like what I expected.

I walked into the gym Monday about 15 minutes before my appointment, so Jared wasn't there yet. There were a couple of guys working out, and any one of them could've crushed my skull with one hand. The guys at STRONG are... well, they're strong. Really strong.

But this is where I got my first surprise. The guys that were working out were all....

...wait for it... NICE. They were really nice guys. One of the guys came up, shook my hand, and said he'd help me get warmed up while I was waiting for Jared. The other guys introduced themselves too, and offered to help if I needed anything.

To be honest, this was a big surprise. Going in, I knew that STRONG gym wasn't your typical gym - that this place is filled with people who take their fitness  REALLY seriously. And in the past, every bodybuilder/strongman/powerlifter I've ever met has been an absolute jerk. They figured out somewhere along the way that they were bigger than everyone else, so they didn't have to worry about anyone putting them in their place - and so they decided they didn't care about being decent to people.

But surprisingly, none of the guys at STRONG gym were like this. At all. In the week that I've been there, I haven't met one person who wasn't nice, respectful, and just all-around cool. Even though I'm struggling to lift stuff they wouldn't even blink at (Jared told me there are 13+ guys at STRONG who can deadlift over 600 lbs), nobody has given me anything but encouragement. Nobody even looked down on me when I whined about how my chest hurt after benching 135 lbs (give me a break, I haven't lifted in like 6 years).

It's nice to know that a beginner can come into a gym filled with guys who are competition-ready and still be welcomed in right away. That's a rare thing.

Tomorrow I'll post a review of my first week with Jared- diet, exercise, & overall experience.  If you're considering getting personal training, you don't want to miss it.
